SoNNET
by Charles Cros (1842-1888)

Je ne vous ferai pas de vers,
Madame, blonde entre les blondes,
Vous réduiriez trop l'univers,
Vous seriez reine sure les mondes.

Vos yeux de saphir, grands ouverts,
Inquiètent comme les ondes
Des fleuves, des lacs et des mers
Et j'en ai des rages profondes.

Mais je suis pourtant désarmé
Par la bouche, rose de mai,
Qui parle si bien sans parole,

Et qui dit le mot sans pareil,
Fleur délicieusement folle,
Éclose à Paris, au soleil.
Sonnet
translated by Kenneth Rexroth

I will not make verses for you,
Lady, blondest of blondes,
You will conquer enough of the universe
You will be queen of all the worlds.

Your sapphire eyes, wide open,
Restless as the waves
Of the rivers, the lakes, and the sea,
Drive me crazy.

And I am always defenseless before
That mouth, rose of May,
Which says so much without words,

Which says the unmatchable words,
That flower deliciously wanton,
Blooming in Paris in the sun.
